Cogden RE Unit: Hanukkah – The Festival of Lights

Week beginning 15/9/25

Cogden pupils explored the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, learning about its origins, traditions, and significance. Pupils began by identifying key symbols such as the menorah and dreidel, and understanding the story of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil. As the unit progressed, they examined how Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah today and reflected on its themes of light, courage, and hope.

The writing focus was fact files, with pupils using expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, and punctuation for clarity to present their learning. Their final pieces showcase well-structured, informative texts that explain what Hanukkah is, how it is celebrated, and why it matters – demonstrating both historical understanding and thoughtful reflection.
