Week Beginning 23/6/25
The Living Things and Their Habitats unit gave Cogden Class a hands-on, inquiry-driven experience into the diversity of life and the environments that support it. Year 3 and 4 pupils began by grouping and classifying living things, using diagrams and keys to explore similarities and differences. From vertebrates to invertebrates, they built a growing fact file filled with observations, sketches, and scientific vocabulary.
As the unit progressed, pupils ventured outdoors to study local habitats, investigate environmental changes, and research endangered species. Each session encouraged curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking, with pupils learning to use evidence to answer real-world questions. By the end, they had developed a deeper understanding of biodiversity and the impact humans have on the natural world – captured in their detailed fact files and thoughtful reflections. It was a unit that connected science with stewardship, inspiring pupils to look more closely at the life around them.
