Seatown History: Why did the ancient Maya change the way they lived?

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 and 6 have taken a deep dive into the world of the ancient Maya. Through maps, artefacts, carvings and city structures, pupils explored how the Maya lived and why their civilisation was considered so advanced. They investigated writing, astronomy, mathematics, farming and architecture, and learned how historians use evidence to understand why many Maya cities were eventually abandoned.

The unit finished with a persuasive argument. Pupils used formal conjunctions (such as therefore, consequently and this shows that) to strengthen their reasoning and present clear, evidence‑based viewpoints.

Children ended the unit by reflecting on what modern societies can learn from the Maya and how future civilisations might view our own achievements.
