Cogden History Unit: The Romans

21st April – 2nd May

The “Romans” unit for Cogden Class, immersed Year 3 and Year 4 students in Roman history while enhancing their narrative writing skills. Students explored key concepts such as the Roman Empire, gladiators, legions, aqueducts, forums, centurions, and amphitheatres. Year 3 students learned to place historical periods on a timeline, while Year 4 students developed a nuanced understanding of timelines and used evidence to answer historical questions.

The latter half of the unit covered Roman conquests, mosaics, the Senate, the Republic, emperors, chariots, and provinces. Year 3 students described key events and figures, while Year 4 students explained their significance.

Throughout, English skills were integrated, with Year 3 students progressing from simple sentences to short narratives about Roman life, and Year 4 students enhancing their narratives with expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. Both year groups worked to understand and apply effective paragraphing to their writing.
