This morning our assembly welcomed Harry and Christian, 2 lifeguards from West Bay into our school. They shared with us how we can stay safe when we are at the beach. Read the captions to find out what we learnt.
-
We learnt that this is RNLI flag - The Royal National Lifeboat Institution
-
If you see this flag on the beach it means it is safe to swim in that area and the lifeguards are there.
-
A plain red flag means 'DANGER'. Do not swim in this area.
-
A windsock usually flies from the lifeguard beach station. If the wind is blowing out to sea, don't use inflatables in the water.
-
If you find you're struggling in the water, don't splash about. Put your head back, stick your chest and arms out gather your breath. Then use 1 arm to wave and shout for help.
-
We all practised this!
-
And again!
-
We learnt about riptides and how to survive if we get caught up in one. Allow the water to drag you out but make the star shape to stay calm. Raise your hand and call for help or swim.....
-
...along the water, parallel to the beach....
-
....until it is safe for you...
-
....to swim back to shore safely.
Thank you Harry and Christian for this useful talk. See you down at West Bay soon!
